United Arab Emirates (UAE; Arabic: الإمارات العربية المتحدة‎ al-ʾImārāt al-ʿArabīyyah al-Muttaḥidah)

The United Arab Emirates, sometimes simply called the Emirates, is a sovereign state in Western Asia at the northeast end of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf. The United Arab Emirates is slightly smaller in area than Portugal. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the west and south and by Oman to the east and northeast., bordering Oman to the east and Saudi Arabia to the south and west.
The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates consisting of Abu Dhabi the largest of these emirates (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain. Each emirate is governed by a ruler; together, they jointly form the Federal Supreme Council.
In the 18th century, Portugal and the Netherlands extended their holdings in the region but retreated with the growth of British naval power there; following a series of truces with Britain in the 19th century, the emirates united to form the Trucial States. The states gained autonomy following World War II. The UAE declared its independence on December 2, 1971, following the completion of treaties with Great Britain.
